Living your story

reading

I am a big fan of Donald Miller, and so I recently bought his new book, A Million Miles in a Thousand Years, having know idea about the content or theme of his new work. And as usual, I was pleasantly surprised and challenged in my thinking. The book is all about his journey of editing his life into a movie. While he was in the middle of this editing process, he learned that we wasn’t living a very good story. He learned that his life was filled with too much TV and unmemorable moments, and that is certainly a trap that we can all fall into. When we begin to judge the success of an evening by what is on television, you know we are suffering from the mundane life.

Life was meant to be lived, and it is up to us to tell a better story. Now we are all certainly well aware that there are things outside of our control that effect and at times manipulate our lives, but so much is in our hands as well. The risks we are willing to take, the times when we sacrifice our comfort or safety are the times that we remember, and share time and time again around a campfire. I am certain that the Author of Life has written for us all a much better story than we are often willing to live. Comfort and an unwillingness to accept change may just be the thorn in the collective side of the American Church.

So join with me, as we all begin to live a story worth telling. Plant moments and opportunities in your day that you would be proud to share with your loved ones or even a stranger! Write a new story for your family filled with risk, and joy and laughter. Write a new story for your career where you challenge yourself in new ways. Write a new story for your children where you speak life, encouragement and growth opportunities into their lives.

Thanks Don, for reminding us that we all have a story not only to tell, but to live as well.

Happy Thanksgiving to one and all!
